How to Recognize a Mojave Rattlesnake

Adults average under 3.3 ft, with the largest documented individuals reaching about 4.5 ft — the smallest of the four species on this site.

Tail Bands: White Wider Than Black

Looks very similar to a Western Diamondback at a glance, but on a Mojave the white bands near the rattle are noticeably wider than the black ones — the reverse of the roughly equal-width bands on a Western Diamondback.

Often Greenish

Base color ranges from brown to yellow to gray, but a distinct pale green or olive tone in some populations is common enough to have given the species its "Mojave Green" nickname — though not every individual shows it.

Slighter Build

Medium-bodied and comparatively slender next to a Western or Eastern Diamondback of similar length, with prominent ridge-like "brow" scales above the eyes.

Why the mix-up matters: a Mojave is often misidentified as a Western Diamondback because the diamond pattern looks so similar. Given how differently their venom behaves medically, the tail bands are worth actually checking rather than assuming.

Where It Lives

Confirmed across southeastern California, southern Nevada, most of Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and western Texas, extending south into central Mexico — the Mojave and Sonoran desert basins specifically.

Unlike species that favor rocky terrain, the Mojave prefers flat, open desert scrub — mesquite, creosote bush, sage, and Joshua tree flats — and tends to avoid dense vegetation and rocky ground. It stays below about 4,000 ft elevation, generally in more open country than a Western Diamondback occupying the same region.

Medical Significance

The One With Genuinely Different Venom

A peer-reviewed source puts the Mojave Rattlesnake’s estimated untreated lethality rate as high as 30–40% — the highest cited of any US rattlesnake. The reason is chemistry, not size.

Type A: Neurotoxic

Rich in a compound called Mojave toxin, which disrupts nerve-to-muscle signaling. This is the venom type most people associate with the species, and the reason it is sometimes cited as one of the most potent rattlesnake venoms in the world.

Type B: Hemotoxic

Lacks Mojave toxin but carries high levels of enzymes that cause tissue damage and interfere with blood clotting — a very different clinical picture from Type A, historically concentrated in populations around central Arizona.

What Real Bite Cases Show

A study published through the North American Snakebite Registry reviewed 20 Mojave Rattlesnake envenomations between 2015 and 2021. In the 9 cases from Arizona, every patient had local swelling and none showed neurological effects. In the 11 cases from California, swelling was present in 9 patients and 5 showed neurological effects — a real difference, though from a small enough sample that it illustrates regional variation rather than proving a fixed rule for every bite in either state.
